REMEMBER THE 5 P’S
Wildfire preparedness is key in case you need to evacuate your home in an emergency. Consider the 5 P’s – people and pets, papers, prescriptions, priceless items and personal needs – as it will help you act quickly and possibly recover once the fire is contained.
PEOPLE AND PETS: Ensure all members of your household, including pets, are accounted for and ready to go.
PAPERS: Gather essential records like birth certificates, passports, vaccination documents and insurance information. Write down critical phone numbers in case your phone battery dies or service becomes unavailable. Include contacts for family, friends, your workplace, doctors, a vet (if you have pets), an out-of-state contact, your landlord, insurance agent and the destination where you’ll be staying, such as a hotel or evacuation center.
PRESCRIPTIONS: Bring all prescription medications, glasses, contact lenses, and other health-related necessities like vitamins, toiletries, feminine hygiene products, and baby care items if needed. Check your first-aid kit to ensure it includes bandages, gauze, medical tape, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers, antacids, antihistamines, and anti-diarrheal medication.
PRICELESS ITEMS: Pack items with significant personal value that you’d hate to lose, such as photo albums, jewelry, heirlooms, or other keepsakes. Be mindful to prioritize space for essential supplies.
PERSONAL NEEDS: Ensure you have the basics covered, including clothing, non-perishable food, water and essential first-aid items. Pack phone chargers and portable power banks. For those with disabilities or special needs, include assistive devices, medical equipment, or other required items. Carry some cash, as electronic payment systems may be unavailable during emergencies.
