Each March, we recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) to promote understanding, inclusion and advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities. This year’s theme, “We’re Here All Year,” highlights the importance of year-round recognition, support and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to thrive in their communities.
Established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, DDAM celebrates the achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities while shedding light on the challenges they face. It’s also an opportunity to advocate for equal access to resources, employment, education and social inclusion.
How You Can Participate:
- Educate yourself and others about developmental disabilities and the importance of inclusion.
- Support organizations and initiatives that provide services, resources and advocacy for the community, such as the National Disability Institute and NACDD.
- Celebrate the contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities in your workplace and community.
- Join a meeting with the Disability Justice Employee Affinity Group.
- Share information and stories on social media using DDAM hashtags to raise awareness.
By taking small actions, we can help build a more inclusive world where everyone can succeed.
“Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is an important time to recognize the strengths, talents and contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities. This month, I encourage everyone to learn more about the disabled community and share what you have learned with a colleague or friend,” says Pacific Clinics’ Clinical Director for the Center for Divergent Connections Sabrina Thakur.
